Team Management

Every SUSC team has outstanding coaching and support from parents. There are two fundamental characteristics of each travel team:

  • The emphasis of the coach is on the development of the team and its players.

  • The administrative and organizational characteristics and responsibilities of the team are largely taken on by the team's parent organization.

The "coaching and development" aspects of the Team are the sole responsibility of the coach:

  • SUSC coaches are well-qualified.

  • SUSC coaches have years of experience playing and/or coaching the game of soccer.

  • SUSC coaches have decided that "they want to coach" and, as such, have made a significant commitment of their time, energy and expertise to the development of SUSC players and their teams.

  • It is SUSC's preference to have coaches who are not parents of team members.

The support of the team involves the parents' organization. The parents' organization is vital to team success as it is responsible for carrying out the administrative needs of the team, and thereby allowing the coach(es) to focus on development. It is through the parents' organization that "team administrative management" is accomplished - "many hands make little work."

Travel Team Structure
The organization of a soccer team is necessarily built around the coaching staff. SUSC coaches, unlike coaches in some clubs, are considered part of the Club support structure, and may change teams from time to time to meet the overall Club needs. This "team of Coaches" approach to soccer is a major asset of the Club. All SUSC coaches are there for the support of all SUSC teams first and individual teams second. Each team is organized as follows:

Head Coach
A Head Coach will be selected by the Director(s) of Coach and Player Development, and approved by the SUSC Board of Directors. The Coach will have overall responsibility for the team, and he or she should be your first contact in the event of a problem. The coach is responsible for team discipline, player substitution, and game tactics. Other SUSC coaches may participate, from time to time, in team training, practices and games

Assistant Coach
Each SUSC team strives to have at least one Assistant Coach who should be an active participant in all team activities. The functions and responsibilities assigned to the assistant coach will be at he Head Coach's discretion. The Assistant Coach should be able to step in for the Head Coach in the event of his/her absence. Assistant Coaches should be afforded the same respect and consideration as the Head Coach.

Team Manager
The Team Manager is an invaluable and necessary member of the team organization and serves "at the discretion and pleasure" of the Head Coach. The Team Manager handles many of the administrative aspects of the team, often supported by other team adults, such as team registration, uniform orders, team contact list, team finances, tournament travel plans, and other items to help the Coach with all of the time-consuming administrative details. If you are interested in becoming a Team Manager, or assisting the Team Manager, please contact the coach or Team Manager of your child's team.

Team Parents Organization
Each team should have at least one person, in support of the team manager, to actively participate in each of the following team administrative functions:

  • Team Club Contact (in addition to the Team Manager)

  • Team Finances Coordinator

  • Team Refreshment Coordinator

  • Team Spirit Kick-Off Classic Program Book Ad Coordinator

  • Team Travel Coordinator

  • Team Volunteer Coordinator

  • Team Fundraising Coordinator (optional)

  • Team Photographer (optional)

  • Team Public Relations (optional)

  • Team Uniform and Accessories Coordinator (optional)
