The Sidekicks were one of the
strongest teams that came through the Spirit United Club.
Approximately 50 boys came out for the two new U-9 teams in the
spring of 1990. Midway through the tryouts I knew that these guys
were going to be something. The Sidekicks went on to win the Delco
Championship. The following spring they were the first Spirit team to
travel to Richmond and they won the Jefferson Cup (91). They followed
their success as they went undefeated the Delaware Spring League that
spring.
The Sidekicks were composed of players who
were committed to playing the best they could be in every match. (The
’Kicks have had a girl and a Finnish exchange student on the roster)
The next three years they went undefeated in Delco League play.
Tournament successes in Virginia, Maryland, New Jersey and
Pennsylvania came from the commitment to play the best and be at the
top of their game.
Spirit tournaments usually saw the ‘Kicks
face strong opponents, once they hosted and defeated a side from
Toronto. Perhaps the game most often recalled is when facing a 7 goal
differential and playing York United for the Spirit Classic
championship, the Sidekicks went onto a 8-0 amazing victory and the
title. Still another Spirit Classic was a win in a double OT last
second break a-way goal.
The Sidekicks played EPYSA state cups often
going to the final four teams. Indoor soccer play found them winning
in many arenas in the region ,playing up on occasions, especially at
WCU tourneys. In a three year run the ‘Kicks reached the EPYSA Indoor
Cup finals to loose in OT, return the next year and win in a 20 hour
day with an OT goal, and then return to the final four the following
year.
The Sidekicks players went onto success in
their scholastic soccer careers. Eventually seven players were core
members of the TWO Time State Championships at Downingtown HS. Many
of them played college soccer - Drexel, St. Josephs, Villanova,
Susquehanna, Messiah, Hobart, Rennselear, Helsinki and WCU. The
Sidekicks have a player on the MLS New York Red Bulls ( Metro Stars)
and another that played in Vietnam (college internship).
The players and families that were part of
our Sidekicks were tremendous people. Our successes were part of a
special bond. We are still very proud of the team.
